Welcome English CV Italian CV Agenda Nile Rodgers and CHIC
John's interest in music started in his early childhood, listening and learning to appreciate music in every form and style. A self taught guitar and electric bass player with an extraordinary musical ear. He soon found that the technical aspect of music reproduction was what would have led him to his present and successful career, first by mixing for local bands in clubs and after, for 9 years, in one of Italy's leading recording studios. After a long time sitting behind a studio mixer, he naturally went back to his initial interest; live sound mixing.

A graduate at Forrest Sherman High School in Naples Italy in 1975. His first working experience was primarily with his father's company in the editorial distribution sector, mainly addressed to the US Military bases in Italy and part of the Mediterranean, then hired by Germany based H.E.A.T. (Harman Europe Audio Team), acting as sales representative for leading brands in the Hi-Fi market within the NATO sales point in Naples Italy.

While operating as sales representative, John was still actively involved in mixing club bands and after two years of selling Hi-Fi, he was offered a position as FOH Engineer for Italian pop star Pino Daniele in 1979 and then with Edoardo Bennato in 1980, two of Italy's leading and top selling artists. This "new" and professional activity brought forth the desire to refine his skills and learn more about what he was walking into and soon decided to follow a course at The Recording Workshop in Ohio, USA. John's graduating evaluation was of a final rating of 99.9%, making it as "cream of the crop" of the school's 1980 winter session.

Back in Naples, he covered the position of Staff Recording/Mixing Engineer for Executive Studios, one of Italy's leading recording facilities at the time, between 1982 and 1991. During these years, John's experience with some of the biggest names in the business, leading him to his present occupation as live sound engineer. John is also fully fluent in Italian and English, important for his career.

John is well known and respected among the many Italian audio rental companies, production services and artists that he has had the fortune to mix for. One of his most important and long term collaborations has been with Lombardi Service in Termoli, Italy, presently one of the most requested sound companies and definitely the owner of the largest stock of Adamson Audio systems in southern Europe today. The company's choice to acquire the Canadian brand came after John's suggestion, due to it's superb audio quality and technical characteristics, also proven during a one year long tour with artist Gigi D'Alessio and appreciated also by his enormous amount of fans. John and Lombardi Service toured with Adamson Audio equipment for five years with D'Alessio's production, around the world as well as in Italy, as well as serving some of Italy's major festivals and events with other leading artists and productions.

Since 2004, John was fortunate to meet one of music's most successful producers and artist, Nile Rodgers, with whom he has been proudly operating ever since as FOH sound engineer and European technical contact for the artist,  teaming up with two of his best friends and major professionals, stage manager/sound engineer Toni "Papiro" Soddu and sound engineer Marco "Tower" Dellatorre.

John's has broadened his expertise on all professional equipment available since the late 70's, including some of the most requested digital mixers available on the market. His favorite, being one of the first sound engineers in Italy to have used it, is the Yamaha PM1D system as well as it's smaller models, the PM5DRH and M7CL, as well as Digidesign's Venue series. His feelings towards the analog vs digital approach are definitely in favour of digital, mainly because of setup time reduction as well as the all intenal processing capabilities. However, John is still one to believe that nothing will ever be able to equal the creativity and quality obtainable with high-range professional analog mixers. However, the tools for this trade are many and only the medium with which John is able to express his musical sensibility.

John has lived most of his life in Naples Italy, but is now stationed in Tuscany, minutes away from beautiful Firenze.

John is also moderator and translator for Nile Rodger's website blog, in Italian: http://www.nilerodgers.com/blogs/pianeta-c-in-italiano

John Ryan is 100% fluent in Italian and English, being born in 1956 from father from New York and mother from Naples, Italy. His interest in music started as a child, learning to appreciate it in every form and style. He learned to play guitar and then electric bass until he started showing interest in the technical aspects of music reproduction, first as sound mixer in small music clubs in his city, then eventually in a professional recording studio. Finally, he ended up discovering that the “live” scene was his real mission, working with professionals from all over the world.

After graduating at Forrest Sherman High School , Naples Italy, in 1975 and after having worked with his father in the editorial business, he made a living working as sales representative for Harman Kardon and JBL for the NATO market in Naples. After two years he accepted to go on tour with Pino Daniele, pop artist who was just starting his way up the ladder, soon to be onw of Italy’s top selling productions still today. After almost one year of touring, John decided to explore the professional audio field a bit more and enrolled at The Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio, graduating with an average rating of 99.9% for the November 1980 courses. In 1992 he started a long experience as Chief Sound Engineer at Executive Studios in Naples, recording and mixing some of the artists that he will also find in the future, in live events and tours.

John is well known and respected among the many Italian audio hire companies and productions he has had the fortune to work with. The most recent, Lombardi Service in Termoli, is one of the most important and equipped hire companies at the moment. John contributed to the popularity of this company by suggesting to try the Adamson Audio brand products, believing that this would have been a turning point for their business and as it turned out, Lombardi Service is now the largest Adamson Y-Axis supplier in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.

The advent of digital mixers has always intrigued John, a fond user of analog equipment, but he happily discovered the potential and practical side of mixers such as the Yamaha PM1D and PM5DRH, on which John is perfectly at home, being able to express his sound mixing needs completely.

1975, diploma at the Forrest Sherman High School of Naples, Italy

1980, graduate of The Recording Workshop School - Chillicothe, Ohio, USA.

John Ryan has recently moved to Florence from Naples and is open to any job in Europe as well as local events and productions in the theatrical or musical scenes where professional sound reinforcement and live mixing applies.
